Job Summary

Monitor and safeguard persons in custody in the short-term holding facility. Ensure persons in custody are safe and secure and their dignity is maintained. Ensure the short-term holding facility is secure and operational readiness in maintained.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assists in the admittance and release of persons in custody in the presence of police officers or Alberta Sheriffs – Court Security and Prisoner Transport Services
  • Assists with the search of the same-sex person in custody
  • Conducts personal or camera checks every 15 minutes of persons in custody
  • Maintains detailed records of persons in custody, including meals served, medications dispensed, and cellblock activity
  • Serves prepared meals for persons in custody and ensures meal inventory is maintained
  • Performs a cell search before and after persons in custody use to ensure no damage or vandalism has occurred and reports to Sergeant-Shift Supervisor on duty if anything detected
  • Cleans cell after use of persons in custody; if cells require deeper cleaning, the cell is taken out-of-use, and janitor will clean on next duty
  • Wipes down phone room and fingerprint room
  • Writes supplies needed on board when facility supplies are low
  • Completes reports and other related documents in a timely manner
  • May be required to give evidence in court
  • Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with LRPS policies and procedures
  • Works in a safe manner and reports unsafe activity and conditions
  • Attends training courses, as required
  • Other duties, as requested

Qualifications

  • Access to reliable transportation
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to sit and stand and lift, carry, push, or pull objects frequently or constantly
  • Knowledge and appreciation of the Cree people and Indigenous people across Canada

Skills/Knowledge

  • A minimum high school diploma or GED is an asset
  • Valid certification in Standard First Aid, CPR Level A or C and AED is an asset
  • Speak Cree is an asset
  • Basic computer skills are an asset
  • WHMIS is an asset

Conditions of Employment

  • Contract, casual, call-in work
  • Must undergo a successful police records check
